Superato (quasi) lo scoglio del “non capisco una sola parola, annuisco, sorrido e speriamo bene” – tecnica tuttora ampiamente utilizzata – arriva quel meraviglioso momento in cui cominci a cogliere le particolarità della lingua. Già perchè una cosa è studiare il francese sui libri, una cosa è viverlo tutti i giorni.

Me ne sto accorgendo ultimamente: colleziono espressioni curiose, le parole che mi piacciono di più, i modi di dire. Intendiamoci, sono ben lontana dall’avere una conoscenza della lingua utile ad una qualsiasi conversazione, soprattutto se fatta di più di 5 frasi dette da me con gli accenti a caso. Ma ci sono cose che osservo e che ascolto quotidianamente di cui è difficile non accorgersi.

Ci sono le parole intraducibili. Ovvero quelle espressioni che sono davvero solo francesi. Complicatissime da spiegare in qualsiasi altra lingua, traducibili con un concetto, un’immagine, una sfumatura, ma non certo qualcosa di più definito. Ci sono i modi di dire e le divertenti “expression imagées“.  E poi c’è l’ “argot” o il “verlan” parlato dai ragazzini francesi, che come qualsiasi slang è davvero incomprensibile a volte, ma è una miniera di parole nuove. E poichè abito di fronte ad una scuola, è praticamente inevitabile ascoltarlo.

E poi si ha a che fare con le parole e le frasi accorciate, che i francesi risparmiano tempo e fiato ad ogni occasione disponibile. Detto da una romana che le parole le pronuncia senza metà delle sillabe è tutto un programma  (avete presente il romano no? ” ‘namo a magnà”, ecco) , ma stavamo parlando del francese no?

Perchè uno cerca d’integrarsi e di non dire mai “ne … pas”, perchè un francese parlando il “ne” non lo dice praticamente mai, mentre lo scrive sempre (almeno se non fa errori di ortografia). Certo ”ça a été” è una cosa complicata da capire per un turista, così come “ça te dit ?”.  Una roba che letteralmente non ha praticamente un significato.

D’altra parte bisogna stare attenti al significato delle frasi. Perchè se qualcuno ti chiede di andare a fare “lèche-vitrines” tu potresti prenderla male a tradurlo letteralmente. Ed anche alla pronuncia o all’utilizzo delle parole, che un verbo o un sostantivo innocuo all’apparenza può diventare una gaffe micidiale.

E poi ci sono gli intercalare senza senso: giustamente se noi italiani abbiamo i “cioè” e gli “insomma”  loro hanno i loro “voilà” e “quoi”. Oppure ci sono le parole che non cambiano, ma guai a dirle come le conoscete: si pronunciano grossomodò, fiascò, bravò…

E nonostante arrivi puntualmente l’infame francese che rende vani tutti i tuoi sforzi d’integrazione e dissimulazione dell’accento (perchè arriva, state certi che arriva), la lingua francese ha delle parole bellissime.

E forse arriverà pure il giorno in cui saranno bellissime anche quando le dirò io.

(Almost) passed  the phase of  ”I don’t understand a single word, I nod, smile and hope” - a technique that I still widely used - comes that wonderful moment when you begin to understand the peculiarities of the language. Yes, because one thing is to study French on the books, one thing is to live it every day.

I’m realizing recently: I collect curious expressions, words that I like most, ways of speaking. It’s clear, I’m still far from having a good knowledge of the language for any conversation, especially if is one made of more than 5 sentences, spoken by me with random accents. But there are things that I observe and I listen every day and it is difficult not to notice.

There are words impossible to translate. Or those expressions that are really only French.Complicated to explain in any other language, translated with a concept, an image, a nuance, but not something more defined. There are sayings and funny ”expression imagées“. And then there ’s ”Argot“ or ”Verlan“ spoken by the French kids, who like anyslang is really incomprehensible sometimes, but it is a gold mine of new words. And sinceI live in front of a school, it is virtually inevitable to listen.

And then you have to do with words and sentences shortened, because all French save time and breath at every available opportunity. Said by a roman that pronounce words without half of syllables, I know, don’t makes sense (do you remember the Roman? ” ‘Namo a Magnà”, well), but we were talking about French, no?

Because you try to integrate yourself and to never say “Ne … pas”, because a French speaking, “Ne” does not say practically never, as instead he always writes (at least if he does not make spelling mistakes). Sure, “ça a été” is a complicated thing to understand for a tourist, as well as “ça te dit?”. One thing that literally has almost no meaning.

On the other hand, you have to be careful with the meaning of sentences. Because ifso meone asks you to go for ”leche-vitrines”, you could take it wrong to translate it literally. And also the pronunciation or use of the words are very important: a verb or a noun that is seemingly innocuous, may become a deadly gaffe.

And then there are the interlayer with no sense: if we Italians have the ”cioè” and ”insomma” the French have their ”voila“ and “quoi”. Or there are words which do not change between Italian and French, but woe to tell these how you know them: they pronounce grossomodò, fiascò, bravò …

Despite it comes regularly, an infamous French that thwarts all of your integration efforts and concealment of the accent (because arrives, you can be sure that arrives), the French language has gorgeous words.

And perhaps will also come the day that will be beautiful even when I speak it.

Oggi l’argomento è frivolo, così come solo la moda può esserlo. Siete avvisati.

Molti di voi avranno riconosciuto nell’immagine qui sopra la “mitica” Birkin di Hermès. In realtà ovviamente si tratta di un ingegnoso omaggio di Pomikaki, azienda giapponese che si dedica alla “riproduzione” in versione trompe-l’œil della famosa borsa, classico status symbol modaiolo che solo pochissime hanno la fortuna di potersi permettere (purtroppo non tutte hanno le disponibilità di Chiara Ferragni o Kim Kardashian).

In realtà non è l’unica azienda a proporre una versione “economica” di bag di lusso, prima ancora si erano affacciate sul mercato Banana Taipei (coreana) e le Together Bags di Thursday Friday. Inutile dire che le ironiche e ben più economiche “copie” sono diventate a loro volta un trend molto diffuso.

Personalmente trovo l’utilizzo del trompe-l’œil molto divertente.

Non si tratta certo di qualcosa di nuovo, soprattutto per i marchi storici della moda: Longchamp nel 2009 aveva già ideato delle deliziose ed ironiche borse, Chanel durante una sua sfilata nel 2010 aveva giocato con i tatuaggi, Fendi si era dedicato alle scarpe, Moschino lo ripropone su alcuni abiti della sua ultima collezione, anche se già aveva sperimentato l’effetto con una bag limited edition in occasione della VFNO 2011 ( il trompe-l’œil durante le VFNO sembra essere un’abitudine per diversi brand).

Ma l’elenco potrebbe continuare a lungo con Comme des Garçons, Anya Hindmarch, Rosalind Keep, Sonya Rykiel, Roberta di Camerino, D&G, ecc…Infine c’è Killah che lo ripropone anche per la prossima estate.

Today the topic is frivolous as only fashion can be. You have been warned.

Most of you will recognize in the image on the top of this post the “legendary” Birkin by Hermès. Actually is an ingenious tribute by Pomikaki, Japanese company that is dedicated to trompe-l’oeil “reproduction” version of the famous bag, classic fashion status symbol that only very few are lucky enough to afford (unfortunately not all women have a closet like Chiara Ferragni or Kim Kardashian).

Actually it is not the only company to propose an ”economic” version of  bags of luxury, even before was in the market Banana Taipei (Korean) and Together Bags by Thursday Friday. Needless to say that these ironic and cheaper ”copies” have become themselves a very popular trend.

Personally I find the use of trompe-l’oeil very cute and funny.

But in fashion it isnt’t anything new, especially for historical brands: Longchamp in 2009 had designed some delicious and ironic bags, Chanel during his show in 2010 had played with tattoos, Fendi has chosen the shoes, Moschino proposing it on some clothes of the latest collection, although had already experienced the trompe-l’oeil effect with a limited edition bag at the VFNO 2011 (the trompe-l’oeil  during VFNO seems to be a habit for many brands).

But the list could go on with Comme des Garcons, Anya Hindmarch, Rosalind Keep, Sonya Rykiel, Roberta di Camerino, D&G, etc. Finally there’s Killah, which propose the trend even for next summer.

Io mi ero sempre immaginata la Costa Azzurra attraverso le classiche e patinate immagini da cartolina: ovvero mare blu, spiagge e sole. Il che è molto realistico, soprattutto per Nizza. Ma non avevo calcolato loro: le Alpi Marittime. E quindi la neve.

Praticamente a meno di due ore di macchina ci si ritrova dal mare direttamente in quota sulle piste da sci. Somma gioia quindi per gli amanti del genere. No, non io.

Io e gli sci ci siamo incontrati per un breve periodo durante l’adolescenza, poi abbiamo scoperto di non essere fatti l’uno per l’altra. Più che altro, ho dovuto rassegnarmi al fatto che era più il tempo che passavo conficcata nella neve che quello in discesa sulla pista (senza considerare il rotolare giù con effetto valanga, ovviamente). Ho quindi abbandonato la disciplina con poco rammarico e con enorme sollievo degli abituali visitatori delle piste. Da allora mi dedico a sport meno impegnativi:  cecchinaggio palle di neve, servizio cartoline fotografiche in quota, occupazione sdraietta prendisole ed arte scultorea pupazzi di neve. Quando ho voglia di emozioni particolarmente intense mi dedico allo slittino.

Ovviamente, andare sulla neve non è stata una mia idea.

Tornando a noi, gli impianti più famosi e più frequentati sono quelli di Auron e Isola 2000, che durante l’inverno sono anche collegati con delle comode navette organizzate dal trasporto pubblico locale. Hanno delle piste molto larghe e sono molto ben organizzati.

I paesaggi sono belli, ideali se siete appassionati di foto. Personalmente non vedo l’ora che arrivi l’estate per esplorare il famoso parco nazionale del Mercantour e dei lupi. Infatti sia d’estate che di inverno ci sono diverse attività.

Arriviamo alle brutte notizie:

• skipass e noleggio attrezzatura sono cari (se avete la possibilità risparmiate file e soldi prenotando online o usufruendo di qualche pacchetto o offerta). Almeno più cari della media italiana.
• anche se non prendete lo skipass e siete a piedi, per salire sulle piste dovete fare la fila e pagare il passaggio a piedi (ad Auron 2,50€).
• i ristoranti locali la maggior parte delle volte non sono un granchè: cari, di igiene discutibile e con piatti poco curati. D’altra parte il pranzo al sacco, nonostante sia praticato diffusamente anche qui, con -22 gradi non è proprio piacevole.
• Per andare alle toilettes si paga 0,40€. Oppure c’è la lunga fila alle toilettes della biglietteria. L’alternativa è tenersela fino ad ora di pranzo ed approfittare del bagno del ristorante.
• cioccolata calda: questa cosa mi ha sconvolto. Qui (ma mi è capitato anche a Nizza) la cioccolata calda, gioia e conforto delle giornate sulla neve, è una brodaglia  fatta di acqua calda e polverina liofilizzata. Oltrettutto gustata al modico prezzo di 3,50€ (sans chantilly, si intende).  Non dico di fare grandi sforzi, ma almeno una tazza di latte ed una bustina di Ciobar?

I had always imagined the Côte d’Azur through the classical and glossy postcard images: blue sea, beaches and sun. That is very realistic, especially for Nice. But I had not counted them, the Maritime Alps. And so the snow.

Practically less than two hours by car you can go directly from the sea at high altitude on the ski slopes. Great joy so for fans of the genre. No, not me.

Ski and I, we met for a brief period during my adolescence, then we found out tha we’re not to be made for each other. Mostly, I had to resign myself to the fact that it was more the time spent stuck in the snow, that skiing on the slope (not including the roll out with a snowball effect, of course). I then abandoned the discipline with very little regret and with great relief of the regular visitors of the ski slopes. Since then I dedicate myself in less challenging sports: sniping snowballs, service photo cards at height, sun loungers presidium and sculptural art snowmen. When I want to feel particularly intense emotions I dedicate myself to the sledding.

Obviously, going on the snow was not my idea.

Going back to us, the most famous and most visited ski areas are Auron and Isola2000, during the winter they are also connected with comfortable shuttles organized by local public transport. They have very wide ski slopes and are well organized.

The landscapes are beautiful, ideal if you’re passionate about pictures. Personally I’m looking forward to the summer to explore the famous national park of Mercantour and wolves. For both summer and winter there are in fact different activities.

Here we come with the bad news:

• skipass and rental equipment are expensive (if you can, avoid line and save money by booking online or by taking advantage of some package or offer). At least more expensive than the average Italian.
• even if you do not take the skipass and you’re walking, if you want to climb on the  ski slopes you have to wait in line and pay to walk pass (to Auron € 2.50).
• Local restaurants most frequently are not so good: expensive, dubious hygiene and food unappealing. On the other hand, the lunch box, although it is widely practiced here too, with -22 degrees is not exactly a pleasant experience.
• To go to the toilet you have to pay € 0.40. Or you could do a long queues at the ticket office toilets. The alternative is to keep it up at lunchtime and take advantage of the restaurant’s bathroom.
• hot chocolate: this thing shocked me. Here (but it’s happened also in Nice) hot chocolate, joy and comfort of days in the snow, is a gruel made of hot water and lyophilized powder. Above all enjoyed at the modest price of 3.50 € (sans Chantilly, that is). I do not mean to make great efforts, but at least one cup of milk and a bag of Ciobar?

Giusto in questi giorni ho acquistato i biglietti per il Carnevale di Nizza. Parteciperò a molte date visto che nelle prossime settimane è prevista una processione di parenti e amici per l’occasione. Spero di pubblicare presto qualche foto.

Qui il Carnevale è una cosa seria, probabilmente il più grande avvenimento della Costa Azzurra. Quest’anno si terrà dal 17 febbraio al 4 marzo e sarà dedicato allo sport (ogni anno c’è un tema).

Da poco hanno eletto la regina del carnevale che si chiama Aurélie ed ormai i preparativi sono quasi terminati. Il programma prevede diversi spettacoli diurni e serali e vari tipi di ingresso dai 10 ai 25 euro (per i bambini è previsto ingresso gratuito o scontato). Ulteriori informazioni le trovate in italiano su questo post di Barbara o in varie lingue sul sito ufficiale.

Particolarmente vantaggiosa l’offerta per chi vuole partecipare a più spettacoli, purchè non nel week-end: 35 € posti a sedere riservati (Battaglia dei Fiori + Sfilata dei carri). Ingresso gratuito invece se vi presentate mascherati. Che sia l’occasione di sfoggiare il vostro costume da “macaron”?

Da non perdere, l’ultimo giorno del carnevale, lo spettacolo (gratuito) di chiusura con fuochi d’artificio in cui si da fuoco al carro del re del Carnevale che viene poi gettato in mare.

Nelle boulangerie potete invece già trovare le classiche “ganses” (letteralmente “cordoncini“ per via della loro forma arrotolata) o “bugnes”, ovvero dei dolci fritti con un impasto come quello delle nostre castagnole.  Le “oreillettes” (“orecchiette“)  sono invece simili alle italianissime “frappe” (o chiacchere o bugie a seconda della regione) e sono sottili e  croccanti sfoglie, aromatizzate ai  fiori d’arancio.

In realtà Febbraio non è solo il mese del Carnevale: ci sono parecchi eventi e manifestazioni come la festa della mimosa a Mandelieu, la Festa del limone a Mentone e della violetta a Tourrettes-sur-Loup. Ma di queste parleremo in seguito.

Just in these days, I bought tickets for the Carnival of Nice. I will attend as many dates in the coming weeks is expected to procession of relatives and friends for the occasion. I hope to post some pictures soon. ;-)

Here, Carnival is a serious thing, probably the greatest event of the Riviera. This year will take place from February 17 to March 4 and is dedicated to the sport (every year there isa theme).

Actually, February is not only the month of Carnival: there are many events like the festival of mimosa in Mandelieu, the Lemon Festival in Menton and violet Tourrettes-sur-Loup. But we will talk about these later. ;-)

Vi è mai capitato di dover organizzare una serata con i vostri amici (cena, festa, serata al bowling, partita di calcetto, ecc…)? Immagino di sì.

Trovare una data che vada bene per tutti è sempre un’impresa, se poi i partecipanti sono tanti si rischia di entrare nel vortice assassino delle mail e degli sms infiniti alla ricerca di una data che vada bene per tutti. Si fa lo slalom tra le sessioni in palestra, corsi di cucina vietnamita, appuntamenti con i parenti, serate libere delle babysitter…Trovare un giorno libero per tutti diventa un incubo ed una gran perdita di tempo.

Ci sono dei servizi online che però permettono di semplificare di molto la scelta della data. Tra l’altro la maggior parte delle funzionalità è gratuita. Per molti servizi non è nemmeno necessaria la registrazione.

Il funzionamento è semplice: si crea un evento, si sceglie un intervallo di date e poi si invitano gli amici tramite mail. A questo punto, ogni invitato selezionerà online i giorni e gli orari in cui è disponibile o che preferisce. Alla fine sarà facile trovare la data in cui si è tutti disponibili o in cui la maggior parte dei partecipanti non ha impegni.

Ci siamo, sta arrivando. Con tutti i suoi cuoricini e le tonnellate di cioccolata. Manca solo una settimana a San Valentino.

Per darvi un’idea, al momento mi trovo in una nazione che ha addirittura un paese dedicato a San Valentino (Saint Valentin), il che lasciatemelo dire, mi inquieta non poco. Senza considerare che la Francia è universalmente riconosciuta come uno dei paesi più romantici. Dite di no? Vi dico solo una parola: Parigi (e ditemi che non è romantica, ecco).

In generale quindi ho un po’ di soggezione in vista del mio primo San Valentino francese. Devo dire che, al contrario dell’Italia, dove di solito già a fine Gennaio c’è un invasione di cuoricini e Baci Perugina, qui a Nizza sono più discreti e non ho ancora visto esagerati riferimenti alla festa in oggetto. Certo è anche vero che da queste parti si organizza addirittura un festival a tema: “Pain, Amour et chocolat” (ad Antibes, dal 10 al 12 Febbraio) con produttori italiani, francesi e stranieri. E no, non ci andrò perchè vendono tanta cioccolata, ma solo per farvi un bel reportage, sia ben chiaro (ok, non ci crede nessuno). Tanto per essere chiari, non è una festa che ho mai amato molto nè da single, nè da accoppiata. L’amore è proprio una di quelle cose che per me va vissuta quotidianamente, per cui un giorno per celebrarlo mi pare proprio inutile. Ma comunque, se è una scusa per farsi un piccolo regalo o una coccola di coppia perchè non approfittarne? Ecco quindi qualche consiglio se vi trovate a passare il San Valentino a Nizza.

Fiori: sono un must di questo giorno. Spesso dicono infatti che il 14 febbraio sia il giorno dei fiorai e spesso non a torto. Per rispettare la tradizione c’è il mercato dei fiori di Cours Saleya che può soddisfare qualsiasi esigenza floreale, magari a caro prezzo, però l’assortimento è praticamente infinito. Altrimenti potete semplicemente cercare il “fleuriste” più vicino a voi. Se proprio non avete nemmeno un minuto, potete sempre ripiegare sull’acquisto nei vari negozi online.

Cioccolata: volete che non ci sia la cioccolata in Francia? E infatti i “chocolatier” abbondano anche a Nizza, non avrete quindi difficoltà a trovare dei fantastici cioccolatini per la vostra dolce metà. Ma anche macarons e frutta candita (specialità tipica del sud della Francia).

Cominciamo da una vera e propria istituzione francese, ovvero LAC: un’autentica boutique del cioccolato. Un altro indirizzo autorevole, ma questa volta tutto nizzardo, è Auer. Meriterebbe una visita solo lo splendido negozio, lo stesso che si tramanda da generazioni fin dal 1820. Anche XOCOALT è molto apprezzato in città. Il negozio è praticamente fatto di cioccolato in ogni sua forma e scultura. Se invece preferite una bella scatola di dolcetti e pasticcini c’è la catena “La Cure Gourmande” che ha un grande assortimento e delle confezioni deliziose. Oppure Emilie’s cookies che rifornisce la città di cookies e cupcakes.

Ristoranti: come in ogni altra città del mondo, anche a Nizza ci sono molti ristoranti che offrono menu dedicati alla serata di San Valentino. Personalmente considero l’usanza molto dispendiosa e poco intima e credo sia preferibile una cenetta in casa, ma mi rendo conto che non sempre si ha questa possibilità, soprattutto se si è in vacanza. Ecco quindi le diverse proposte:

-Su Citivox trovate una guida che raccoglie molti dei menu di San Valentino offerti dai ristoranti di Nizza. Per facilitarvi il compito hanno addirittura creato una APP mobile per cercare il vostro ristorante per San Valentino. Altro elenco su La Fourchette, dove potete anche prenotare direttamente online e usufruire di qualche sconto.

-Sempre su Cityvox una guida dei ristoranti più romantici scelti dalla redazione. Altri ristoranti con atmosfera romantica sono La maison de Marie, La Reserve de Nice (con splendida vista sul mare) e La Gargamelle. Poi si sa che io ho un debole per Chez Palmyre.

-Se la cena non vi basta, ci sono sempre le scelte che comprendono anche un ulteriore intrattenimento. Al Marineland (parco acquatico) organizzano una cena con spettacolo serale delle orche e di Cabaret. Al “Musée de la Curiositè et de L’insolite” invece serata con cena, visita del museo e animazione. Altro spettacolo di cabaret+cena a “Le Baroque“.

Regali: in occasione di San Valentino non è necessario spendere per forza milioni di euro in gioielli o regali costosi. Se proprio non potete farne a meno, Burma crea dei gioielli principeschi con diamanti sintetici che però sembrano veri.

Comunque anche un piccolo regalo, magari originale, può fare la differenza. Un suggerimento potrebbe essere quella di regalare dei biglietti per il prossimo Carnevale di Nizza, per una serata all’Opera (solo l’edificio, vale una visita) o per il parco Marineland. Se proprio non avete idee sicuramente troverete qualcosa a Les Galeries Lafayettes, a Cap3000 o al Nice Etoile.

Se volete qualcosa di più colorato e originale ci sono La chaise Longue (ne avevo parlato anche qui), Pylones o  Casa. Oppure fate un giro nello store del museo MAMAC o FLY.

DIY: il fai da te è sicuramente la soluzione più economica e personalizzabile. Se avete la possibilità e siete delle brave cuoche, potete dare libero sfogo alla vostra creatività con tante ricette di San Valentino. Oppure scaricare tante decorazioni da stampare e attaccare dove preferite. Per i regali vale la stessa regola, date libero sfogo alla vostra creatività! Poi, visto che l’ambientazione lo consente, perchè non regalarvi tante belle foto insieme, sullo stile della celebre fotografa Juliane Berry(con Oysho potreste addirittura vincere un love photobook)? Sicuramente vi divertirete e in più avrete un bellissimo ricordo del vostro San Valentino.

Here we go, it’s coming.. With all  hearts and tons of chocolate. Missing only one week on Valentine’s Day.

To give you an idea, right now I am in a nation that has even a village dedicated to St. Valentine (Saint Valentin), which let me tell you, worries me greatly. Not to mention that France is universally recognized as one of the most romantic country. You say no? One word: Paris (and tell me that is not romantic).

In general, therefore I’m a bit awe at regards to my first french Valentine’s Day. I must say that, contrary to Italy, where usually already at the end January there is an invasion of  little hearts and Baci Perugina, here in Nice people is more discreet and I have not seen exaggerated references to the feast in question. Of course it  is also true that around here is even organizing a theme festival: ”Pain, Amour et chocolat“ (Antibes, from 10th to 12th February) with Italian producers, French and foreign. And no, I will not go because they sell a lot of chocolate, but only to make a nice reportage for you, this is quite clear (ok, no one believes).

Just to be clear, Valentine’s Day is a celebration that I never loved neither as a single person, neither be coupled. For me love is just one of those things to be lived every day, so a day to celebrate it seems quite useless. But anyway, if it’s an excuse to get a small gift or a cuddling for couple why not take advantage? So here are some tips if you decide tospend Valentine’s Day in Nice.

Flowers: are a must on this day. Often it is said that February 14 is the day of florists and not without reason. To respect the tradition there is the flower market in Cours Saleya that can satisfy any floral need, perhaps at a high price, but the range is virtually infinite. Otherwise you can just search for ”fleuriste” closer to you. If you do not even own a minute, you can always decide to make a purchase at various online stores.

Chocolate: you could possibly think that there is no chocolate in France? And in fact the”chocolatier” abound in Nice, then you will not have trouble finding the fantastic chocolates for your sweetheart. But also macarons and candied fruit (typical specialties of the south of France).

Let’s start with a real French institution, that is LAC: a real chocolate boutique. Another famous address, but this time only Niçois, is Auer. Deserves a visit just the beautiful store, the same that has been handed down for generations since 1820. Even XOCOALT is popular in the city. The store is practically made ​​of chocolate in all its forms and sculpture. If you prefer a nice box of sweets and pastries, there is the franchise ”La Cure Gourmande“ which has a great assortment and lovely packaging. Or Emilie’s Cookies, which supplies the city of cookies and cupcakes.

Restaurants: as in any other city in the world, even in Nice there are many restaurants that offer special menus for the evening of Valentine’s Day. Personally I consider the custom very expensive and not so intimate and I think it is better a dinner at home, but I realize that there is not always this opportunity, especially if you are on holiday. So here are various options:

-On Citivox you find a guide that collects most of Valentine’s Day menu offered by restaurants of Nice. To simplify the task they have even created a mobile APP to search your restaurant for Valentine’s Day. Another  list on La Fourchette, where you can also book directly online and benefit of some discount.

- Always on Cityvox a guide of the most romantic restaurants chosen by the editors. Other restaurants with romantic atmosphere are La Maison de Marie, La Reserve de Nice (with stunning views of the sea) and the Gargamelle. Then you know that I’m partial to ChezPalmyre.

-If the dinner is not enough, there are always choices that include an additional entertainment. At Marineland (water park) are organizing a dinner with an evening show of whales and Cabaret. At the ”Musée de la Curiosite et de L’insolite”  is scheduled an evening with dinner, museum and entertainment. Another cabaret show + dinner at ”Le Baroque“.

Gifts: To celebrate Valentine’s Day does not necessarily have to spend millions of euros in jewels or expensive gifts. If you really can not do without, Burma creates princely jewelry with synthetic diamonds that look real.

Oggi è il 2 Febbraio e qui in Francia si festeggia “La Chandeleur“.

Come molte delle feste francesi (Les 13 desserts de Noël o la Galette des rois), anche questa ha un forte simbolismo religioso e si festeggia 40 giorni dopo Natale: rappresenta la purificazione della Vergine dopo il concepimento di Gesù. In Italia l’equivalente della festa della Candelora che però normalmente non si festeggia in maniera particolare. Mentre negli U.S.A. è rappresentata dal famoso giorno della marmotta (se non avete già visto il divertente film con Bill Murray, fatelo immediatamente!).

Qui ed in molti altri paesi francofoni, si celebra invece con una cosa che più francese non si può, ovvero le crêpes. Sembra che i francesi non riescano a fare a meno di trasformare ogni festa in una scusa per mangiare, il che comunque è un’abitudine molto diffusa anche in Italia, per cui lungi dal criticare tale usanza. Soprattutto perchè io adoro le crêpes! =)

La simbologia vuole che questi dischi dorati rievochino il sole che ritorna a splendere dopo l’inverno e quindi il prossimo arrivo della primavera. In realtà l’idea delle crêpes sembra nata a partire da papa Gélasio I, che le fece distribuire ai pellegrini che giungevano a Roma nel giorno della Candelora.

La tradizione vuole che si preparino le crêpes,  tenendo nella mano con cui si scrive una moneta e che si girino facendole saltare in padella con l’altra mano. Se siete così abili e l’operazione va a buon fine senza spargimento di crêpes su muri o pavimento avrete fortuna per l’anno a venire. Se proprio non ve la sentite o rischiate di tappezzare la cucina di crêpes potete sempre ripiegare su questo simpatico gioco online.

Trattandosi di una festa molto antica ci sono diversi proverbi francesi riguardanti  ”La Chandeleur” di cui molti a sfondo “meteorologico”, così come non mancano le filastrocche per i bimbi, come la seguente:

La dieta post-natalizia sembra dovrà aspettare ancora…Qui in Francia è davvero impossibile con tutte queste caloriche e ravvicinate festività!

In Italy the equivalent of Candlemas that isn’t normally celebrated in a particular way. While in the U.S.A. is represented by the famous Groundhog Day (if you have not already seen the entertaining film with Bill Murray, do it immediately!).

In France but also in many other French-speaking countries,”La Chandeleur” is celebrated with a thing that cannot be more french: crêpes. It seems that the French turn every festivity into an excuse to eat, which is still a widespread habit in Italy, so far from criticizing this practice. Especially because I love crêpes! =)

The symbolism of these golden disks remember that the sun is shining brightly again after the winter and then the coming spring. Actually the idea of crêpes seems born fromPope Gelasius I, who had distributed to the pilgrims who came to Rome on the day of Candlemas.

The tradition is to prepare crêpes, taking a coin in your writing hand and turn the crêpe in the pan with your other hand. If you’re so clever, and the operation is successful without the shedding of crêpes on walls or floor you will have luck for the coming year. If you  risk papering the kitchen of crêpes you can always use this nice online game.

There is nothing more than prepare your crêpes, savory or sweet that they are. I have in mind a production of my favorites: crêpes with strawberries and chocolate and nutellà crêpes. The post-Christmas diet seems to have to wait again … Here in France it is really impossible with all these caloric and close holidays!

Forse quando sei lontano da casa cerchi dei luoghi familiari e che te la ricordano. Magari è per questo che amo tanto questo posto, attualmente uno dei miei preferiti qui a Nizza. Chez Palmyre infatti assomiglia vagamente ad un’antica trattoria romana e ha molto poco dei grandi ristoranti turistici che affollano la città.

Tanto per cominciare è piccolo, molto piccolo. Che per me vuol dire intimo e familiare, in questo caso. E’ frequentato prevalentemente da francesi, che come in qualsiasi paese sono la migliore garanzia per la cucina autentica. Si trova nel cuore della vecchia Nizza, ma protetto dal caos del centro e nascosto nella piccola Rue Droite. Ha un’atmosfera dal gusto antico, con tovaglie a quadretti rossi, posate d’argento e tovaglioli ricamati, come quelli della nonna. Ci sono scaffali pieni di antiche bilance (le adoro) e vecchie scatole di latta (io addirittura le colleziono). In fondo al ristorante è appesa una foto della fondatrice, Madame Palmyre. Il menu cartaceo non esiste: le portate sono scritte fuori all’entrata e su uno specchio all’interno, solo in francese. Capisco che per uno straniero possa essere complicato, ma per me rappresenta un pregio. Non ho mai sopportato i menu scritti in 2 o 3 lingue, magari anche con le traduzioni più fantasiose e assurde. Comunque in caso di difficoltà, basta chiedere, si parla anche qualche parola d’italiano qui. =)

La gestione è affidata a due giovani ragazzi (uno in cucina ed uno in sala) che hanno evidente passione e talento per il loro lavoro. Una volta ho addirittura avuto la fortuna di incontrare qui la figlia di Madame Palmyre (molto spesso lei mangia qui), che arrivata alla pensione ha lasciato a loro la gestione del ristorante della madre. Chiaccherando ci ha raccontato della sua famiglia e della loro tradizione culinaria e di come questa venga rispettata anche dalla nuova gestione. Ne è testimonianza il fatto che l’immagine scelta per il biglietto da visita sia una foto d’epoca della signora Palmyre e di sua figlia davanti al loro ristorante e che reciti con orgoglio “Cuisine familiale depuis 1926″.

A proposito di cucina, difficilmente troverete un menu uguale ogni mese. Le portate cambiano a seconda della stagionalità e della fantasia dello chef. Si parla sempre di cucina casalinga francese, ma non mancano creatività e curiosità gastronomiche. Di solito ci sono quattro o più proposte per le “entrées”, i “plats” e i “desserts”. Il menu prevede una scelta per ogni portata e un costo totale di 15€, che comprende anche carafe d’eau e baguette a volontà (ovviamente altre bevande sono a pagamento). Rapporto qualità-prezzo ineguagliabile per Nizza, capirete quindi che se volete mangiare qui la prenotazione è assolutamente obbligatoria e da fare con largo anticipo, specialmente per i week-end.

I piatti sono sempre ottimi, gustosi e ben presentati. Ovviamente sono basati sulla tradizione culinaria francese, ma non disdegnano qualche incursione italo-nizzarda come parmigiano, gnocchi, pesto e prosciutto di Parma. Qualche esempio: nella foto dall’alto a sinistra “Petit Pot de chocolat avec amandes”, “soup du jour” (courgette), “Vacherin aux pommes et crème glacée à figues”, “saucisses et lentilles dans  cocotte”, “parmesan biscuit avec tartare de légumes”, “gnocchi sauce de daube”.

For example it is a small restaurant, very small. That for me means cozy and familiar, in this case. It is popular with French people, that is, as in any country, the best guarantee for authentic cuisine. It is located in the heart of Old Nice, but protected from the hustle and hidden in the little Rue Droite. It has an atmosphere of bygone days, with red-checkered tablecloths, silver cutlery and serviettes, like grandmother ones. There are shelves full of old scales (I love them) and old tin cans (I actually collect them). In the back of the restaurant hangs a picture of the foundress, Madame Palmyre. The menu doesn’t exist on paper: the dishes are written outside the entrance and inside on a mirror, only in French. I understand that for a foreigner could be complicated, but for me it is a quality. I hate menus written in 2 or 3 languages​​, perhaps even the most imaginative and absurd translations. However in case of difficulties, just ask, they also speak a few words of Italian here (and also english i think). =)

The management is entrusted to two young guys (one in the kitchen and one in the hall) that have obvious talent and passion for their work. Once I even had the good fortune of meeting here the daughter of Madame Palmyre (very often she eats here). She came into retirement and so has left the management of mother’s restaurant. Chatting she told us about her family and their culinary traditions and how this is respected also by the new management. This is attested by the fact that the image chosen for the business card is a period  picture of Mrs Palmyre and her daughter in front of their restaurant and that proudly recites that ”Cuisine familiale depuis 1926″.

About food, difficult to find here the same menu each month. The courses change according the season and the imagination of the chef. We always talking about French home cooking, but there are also gastronomic creativity and curiosity. There are usually four or more proposals for the ”entrées”, the “plats” and ”desserts”. The menu involving a choice for each course and a total cost of 15 €, which also includes carafe d’eau and baguette (of course, other drinks are charged extra). Value for money unbeatable in Nice, then you will easily understand that if you want to eat here the reservation is absolutely mandatory and to do well in advance, especially for the weekend.

The food is always excellent, tasty and well presented. Obviously is based on French culinary tradition, but there are also few incursions Italian-Nice as parmesan, gnocchi, pesto and Parma ham. Some examples: in the photo above, from the left  ”Petit Pot de chocolat avec amandes”, “soup du jour” (courgette), “Vacherin aux pommes et crème glacée à figues”, “saucisses et lentilles dans  cocotte”, “parmesan biscuit avec tartare de légumes”, “gnocchi sauce de daube”.

Per il secondo appuntamento della nostra rubrica del venerdì, parliamo di qualcosa che farà piacere a tutti i beauty addicted, ovvero le Glossybox.

Cos’è?

E’ un servizio in abbonamento (che però sembra si possa interrompere in qualsiasi momento con un adeguato preavviso) ideato da una azienda tedesca, ma presente in diversi paesi (Francia, Italia, UK, Germania, Brasile, Korea, Australia e tra poco anche negli U.S.A.). L’abbonamento permette di ricevere a casa propria una scatola con una selezione di prodotti cosmetici o di make-up (di solito 5, diversi a seconda del paese), prevalentemente in formato mini e a volte anche in full-size. Si tratta di solito di una selezione di prodotti nuovi, accompagnati da alcune schede illustrative,  che possono essere così provati prima  di un eventuale acquisto.

E’ inoltre possibile lasciare una recensione dei prodotti ricevuti. C’è anche la possibilità di un abbonamento per gli uomini, ma gli invii in questo caso sono trimestrali e non mensili.

Quanto costa?

Dipende. Nel senso che dipende dal paese in cui siete. In Italia ha un costo di 14€ al mese compresa la spedizione. In Francia invece costa 10€ + circa 3€ di spedizione. In Germania 10€. Il costo in linea di massima si aggira intorno a queste cifre, ma la cosa migliore è controllare sul sito del paese di appartenenza.

Non l’ho ancora provato personalmente (se volete farmi un regalo…=P), ma la cosa mi ha incuriosito perchè sono una patita dei campioncini e dei cosmetici e profumi travel-size. Li trovo deliziosi e utili da portare in giro. Inoltre mi piace provare cose nuove e mi stufo presto. A volte in profumeria semplicemente mi blocca un prezzo troppo alto. Questa, per chi ha le mie stesse esigenze, penso sia una buona soluzione ad un prezzo tutto sommato accettabile. E poi chi non ama i pacchi sorpresa? =)

C’è anche chi sostiene che i mini-size sono principalmente campioni omaggio e non dovrebbero essere venduti, oppure che la taglia dei prodotti è troppo piccola. C’è anche chi, semplicemente, utilizza prodotti abituali e non ha interesse a provarne di nuovi. Credo che ognuno, come al solito, si possa fare un’idea in base alle proprie esigenze.

Vi ricordo  che anche in questo caso ci sono competitor e alternative locali:

Recentemente ad esempio la francese Joliebox e l’inglese Boudoir Prive si sono unite, per una concorrenza diretta a servizi come la glossybox. C’è da dire però che in questo caso operano solo sul suolo nazionale britannico ed in Francia.

Update: anche Glossybox France e Moncoffretbeautè si sono unite.

Negli U.S.A. invece l’equivalente della Glossybox è la Birchbox che, sempre alle stesse condizioni, costa 10$. In Germania c’è anche Boobox, ma non sembra essere proprio uguale agli altri servizi e al momento non mi sembra attivo (magari qualche lettore tedesco sa darmi qualche informazione in più…).

L’idea ha avuto talmente tanto successo, che c’è chi ha pensato di fare una versione “canina” della glossybox (BarkBox) con prodotti specifici per i propri animali domestici.

Mi sono appena resa conto, che il nome di questa mia rubrica del venerdì è terribilmente simile a “Colissimo“, che qui in Francia è il classico pacco postale (“Colis” in francese vuol dire appunto pacco). Immagino un francese che passi da queste parti pensando che io sia in qualche modo collegata a “La Poste” e sia dedita alla spedizione internazionale.

Sarà il caso di piantarla con i nomi originali, eh? =P

For the second round of  this Friday column, we talk about something that will please all beauty addicts, the Glossybox.

What is it?

Is a subscription service (but it seems you can stop at any time with a proper notice) created by a German company, but present in several countries (France, Italy, UK, Germany, Brazil, Korea, Australia and soon in U.S.). The subscription allows you to receive at home a box with a selection of cosmetics or make-up (usually 5 different, depending on the country), principally in mini format and sometimes in full size. This is usually a selection of brand new products, accompanied by some illustrative cards, so they can be tested before a possible purchase.

You can also leave a review of the products received. There is even the possibility of a subscription for men, but in this case submissions are every three months and not monthly.

What does it cost?

It depends. In the sense that it depends on the country where you live. In Italy it costs of 14€ per month including shipping. In France it costs 10 € + 3 € of shipping. In Germany 10 €. The cost in general is around these numbers, but the best thing is to check the website of your country.

I have not yet personally experienced (if you wish to make me a present …= P), but it intrigued me, because I’m a passionate of the samples and travel-sized cosmetics and perfumes. I find them lovely and useful to carry around. I also like trying new things and I get bored quickly. Occasionally I just blocked by too high cosmetic price. This, for those who have my same needs, could be a good solution at a price quite acceptable. And anyway, who does not like surprise packages? =)

There’s also those who argue that the mini-size, are mainly free samples and should not be sold, or that the size of the products is too small. There are also those who simply use habitual products, and has no interest in test new ones. I believe that everyone, as usual, can choose according to their needs.

I remind you that even in this case there are competitors and local alternatives:

Recently, for example, the French Joliebox and English Boudoir Prive  have joined for a better competition against services such as glossybox. We must say that in this case they operate only in France and UK territories.

Update: also Glossybox France and Moncoffretbeautè have joined.

In the U.S. the equivalent of Glossybox is Birchbox that, with the same conditions, costs $ 10. In Germany there is also Boobox, but does not seems to be exactly like the other services and currently it does not seem active (maybe some German reader can give me more information …).

The idea has been so successful, that some have thought to do a “pet” version of  these box (BarkBox) with specific products for pets.
