Souvenirs a Nizza e in Costa a Azzurra? – Parte 2

Ci eravamo lasciati con la prima parte della guida al souvenir e con i grandi classici del genere. La questione sta prendendo più tempo del previsto (ve l’avevo detto!), ma ecco le ultime cose da sapere se siete alla ricerca del souvenir perfetto in Costa Azzurra:

Altri prodotti tipici del Sud della Francia:

• Cicale: le troverete di ceramica,  a forma di sapone, ricamate, dipinte, a calamita. Insomma avrete l’imbarazzo della scelta.
• Olive: tipica del posto è la “tapenade“, così come l’artigianato del legno di olivo ed i saponi all’olio di oliva. Le olive le troverete, tanto per cambiare, anche su ceramiche, ricami, stampe, ecc…
• Lavanda: ricordate solo che ci sono in commercio principalmente 2 tipi di lavanda: il “lavandin” e la “lavande”. C’è differenza perché il lavandin è meno pregiato della lavanda, quindi mediamente deve costare meno.
• Saponi: la vicinanza con Marsiglia si fa sentire. Così come quella dei produttori di profumi e di olio di oliva. Troverete quindi saponi e saponette di ogni forma, colore, dimensione e fragranza.
• Sale e spezie: non credo siano tipici di questa parte della Francia, ma in giro c’è una grande varietà di sali e spezie. Confezionati in ogni tipo di contenitore, dalle provette ai barattoli.  Locali invece sono le “Herbes de Provence“, che troverete ovunque.

Per risparmiare:

• Mercati e vide-greniers: meriterebbero una visita, a prescindere dai souvenirs ( ça va sans dire. Se potete, almeno per gli acquisti, evitate i mercati commerciali e turistici come Cours Saleya e il Marché Provençal di Antibes).  Di solito si tengono nel week-end e sono un’occasione unica per recuperare oggetti e curiosità da regalare a poco prezzo. Ma anche da regalare a sè stessi.
• Supermercati: Invece di spendere moltissimo nelle lussuose pasticcerie o nei negozi di delicatezze alimentari, fate semplicemente un giro in un grande supermercato. Una scatola piena di delizie locali è un regalo sempre gradito ed anche economico. Fate scorta di dolcezze locali, biscotti, thè, snacks e marmellate. E comunque nei supermercati più forniti (reparto alimentare delle Galeries Lafayette ad esempio) troverete anche delle belle confezioni regalo.
• Fai da te: i sacchetti di lavanda già confezionati costano di più e sono spesso riempiti di ovatta. Comprare una confezione di fiori di lavanda e poi fateli da voi. Così come le confezioni con i saponi: comprate un bel cestino, un po’ di carta, riempite con piccoli acquisti sfusi ed ecco una bella confezione pronta. Idem per le spezie o il sale: comprarle sfuse e poi confezionarle con dei contenitori carini, magari dei piccoli barattoli di prodotti francesi ben lavati e puliti (marmellate, snack, caramelle, ecc..)
• Mentone: Ci si arriva facilmente con il treno regionale da Nizza e Antibes. E’ una cittadina molto carina, con degli ottimi ristoranti, la maggior parte tra l’altro italiani. A parte questo ci sono moltissimi negozi di souvenir e i prezzi sono mediamente più bassi che altrove. Inoltre c’è il mio negozio di souvenir preferito che è anche enorme: Les images de Provence.
• Negozi per la casa e  ”tutto a 2 euro”: anche qui in Francia ci sono i negozi “tutto a 2 euro”. Meno che in Italia, ma si trovano anche a Nizza (no, i negozi cinesi qui non sono ancora arrivati). Bisogna saper cercare, ma a volte nascondono delle idee regalo molto simpatiche ad un costo irrisorio. A Nizza trovate un negozio in centro e uno più grande in zona Acropolis.  Idee regalo per la casa a prezzi molto accessibili ci sono anche da Eurodif, FLY e CASA.

Regali originali:

Ecco qualche negozio particolare, dove trovare un regalo originale o meno classico:

• Pylones: accessori di tutti i tipi, coloratissimi e particolari.
• La Chaise Longue : oggettistica e mobili dal design particolare e poco convenzionale.
• Nature & Découvertes: per gli amanti della natura, del new age, del benessere, della sopravvivenza e del thè!
• Le Palais des thés: ovviamente se dovete fare un regalo a qualcuno che è un consumatore abituale di thè, merita una visita.
• Ferret: è un gioielliere con diversi punti vendita a Nizza e dintorni. La sua particolarità è di essere l’unico a vendere una linea di gioielli con l’immagine di un’icona di Nizza, ovvero la chaise bleue.
• Fnac e Virgin Store: sono dei grandi magazzini che vendono libri, hi-tech, ecc…Per comprare il classico quaderno con sopra una scritta in francese o  i macarons, un gadget simpatico, una t-shirt, un bel libro francese di pasticceria, un calendario con i proverbi francesi, i set per fare i macarons, i mini-libri con le ricette delle marche più amate in Francia o quello con le scuse più utilizzate in francese.
• Acquerelli: la Vieux-Nice è piena di botteghe di artisti locali e di venditori di acquerelli che raffigurano i bellissimi paesaggi della Costa Azzurra. Se volete andare sul sicuro, vi consiglio l’atelier di Sylvie T.
• Transparence: sempre nella parte vecchia della città, nel labirinto di strade e vicoli, si trova un negozio piuttosto particolare che vende inclusioni di miniature di barche, piccoli oggetti e altro. Immancabile quella della classica sedia blu.
• Calcio: per gli appassionati di sport, in particolare di calcio, c’è il negozio che vende il merchandising della squadra locale.

Consigli:

• Ricordatevi di chiedere ai negozianti della papier cadeaux o papier emballage per trasportare i vostri regali.
• Cercate di fare regali originali, ma non a tutti i costi: il massaggiatore vibrante a forma di Negresco per la nonna. Anche no.
• Ricordate che i negozi chiudono presto e che spesso fanno una pausa di 2 ore per il pranzo. Inoltre di solito non fanno entrare già fin da un quarto d’ora prima dell’orario di chiusura.
• Per lo shopping, partite da Avenue Jean Medecin, dove trovate la maggior parte dei negozi, il Nice Etoile e Les Galeries Lafayette. Altrimenti c’è anche CAP3000. Per l’artigianato locale e i souvenir tipici invece, dirigetevi verso la parte vecchia della città.
• Saldi: informatevi sulle date dei saldi (soldes) e ricordate che in Francia ci sono quasi sempre le démarque (ribassi progressivi di settimana in settimana fino al 70%)

 

Regali Last-Minute:

Vi mancano dei regali da fare, oppure il tempo di permanenza è stato troppo breve per cercare dei souvenirs da riportare a casa? DON’T PANIC!  In aeroporto, come di consueto, potrete trovare qualche idea che vi salverà dall’imbarazzo di tornare a mani vuote. Ecco qualche suggerimento:

• Fragonard: All’interno del duty free, troverete sicuramente i prodotti di questa “maison du parfumeur” che produce le sue fragranze nella zona delle Alpi Marittime. Con 10€ potrete trovare delle confezioni con 4 saponette profumate in varie fragranze, utili sicuramente per ogni tipo di destinatario. Molto interessanti i pacchetti regalo, in particolare quello dei profumi solidi (utili soprattutto da tenere in borsetta e se si viaggia in aereo): si tratta di una confezione di 6 scatoline, con diverse profumazioni. Il costo è abbastanza elevato (30€), ma si può facilmente trasformare in 6 piccoli regali per delle amiche, la mamma, le sorelle, le zie, ecc…Ammortizzando quindi la spesa.
• L’Occitane:  questa marca di cosmetici e profumi si trova anche in Italia, ma è meno diffusa e conosciuta. Ha dei prodotti molto curati e sicuramente sarà facile trovare un piccolo regalo da riportare a casa.
• Specialità francesi: Oltre al classico negozio che vende le specialità regionali, troverete anche il negozio La Cure Gourmande, catena di negozi francese conosciuta, più che per la qualità dei suoi prodotti, per le meravigliose scatole di latta e confezioni regalo in stile vintage. Se invece non volete rinunciare a riportare a casa i classici “macarons”, da Paul dovreste trovare un piccolo assortimento.
• Accessori e Abbigliamento: se si tratta di un regalo importante e con un budget più alto, sicuramente la mamma o la fidanzata apprezzeranno moltissimo un foulard di Hermes o una borsa di Longchamp.
• Bambini: il popolo francese ha un’attenzione particolare per i più piccoli. I negozi di giocattoli sono molto curati e i libri per bambini sono dei veri capolavori. In aeroporto troverete un negozio multimarca dove acquistare qualche regalo anche per i bambini. E poi, c’è la farmacia. Ebbene sì, se vi capita di passarci (spero di no), cercate i gel disinfettanti per le mani “assanis“. La linea kids e girls è pocket, profumata e colorata. I bambini adoreranno lavarsi le mani.

We had left with the first part of the souvenirs guide and with the great classics of the genre. The issue is taking longer than expected (I told you so!), but here are the last things to know if you are looking for the perfect souvenir in Cote d’Azur:

Other products typical of the South of France:

• The cicadas: you’ll find these ceramic-shaped, soap, embroidered, painted magnet. So you will have plenty of choice.
• Olives: typical of the place is the “tapenade“, as well as the crafts of olive wood and olive oil soaps. The olives , as usual,  are even on ceramics, embroidery, prints, etc. …
• Lavender: just remember that there are on the market mainly 2 types of lavender: the “lavandin” and “lavende”. There is a difference because the lavandin is less precious than lavander, so it must cost less on average.
• Soap: the proximity of Marseilles is evident. As the producers of perfumes and olive oil. You’ll find soaps of every shape, color, size and fragrance.
• Salt and spices: I don’t think these are typical of this part of France, but around there is a wide variety of salts and spices. Packaged in every kind of container, from the tubes to the jars. But local are the “Herbes de Provence“, you will find anywhere.

To save money:

• Markets and vide-greniers: they deserve a visit, apart from souvenirs (ça va sans dire. If you can, at least for shopping, avoid commercial and tourist markets as Cours Saleya and the Marché Provençal Antibes). Usually take place on the weekend and are a unique opportunity to get curious objects as gifts at low prices. But also to give to themselves.
• Supermarkets: Instead of spending a lot over the pastry shops or in stores of delicacies, simply ride in a large supermarket. A box full of local delights is a gift always appreciated and also affordable. Stock up on local sweets, biscuits, tea, snacks and jams. And anyway the best stocked supermarkets (Galeries Lafayette department of food for example) you will also find some beautiful gift sets.
• Do it yourself: the lavender bags packed already cost more and are often filled with cotton wool. Buy a package of lavender flowers and then you could make them. As the soap gifts: buy a nice basket, a bit of paper, filled with small purchases in bulk and here’s a nice package ready. Ditto for spices or salt: buy in bulk and then pack it with some cute containers, perhaps small jars of French products, well washed and cleaned (jams, snacks, candy, etc. ..)
• Menton: You can reach it easily by local train from Nice and Antibes. It’s a very pretty town, with excellent restaurants, most of them Italians. Aside from this there are many souvenir shops and the prices are generally lower than anywhere else. Also there is my favorite gift shop, that is also huge: Les images de Provence.
• Shopping for home and “just 2 euro”: here in France there are shops “just 2 euros.” Less than in Italy, but there are also in Nice (no, the Chinese shops here are not there yet). We must know how to look, but sometimes these places conceal some very nice gifts at a minimal cost. In Nice, you’ll find a shop in the city center and a bigger one in the Acropolis area. Gifts for the home at very affordable prices are also at Eurodif, CASA and FLY.

Original gifts:

Here are some particular shop, where to find an original gift or less classic:

• Pylones: accessories of all types, and colorful details.
• The Chaise Longue: product and furniture design detail and unconventional.
• Nature & Découvertes: For nature lovers, new age, survival and tea gifts!
• The Palais des Thés: obviously if you make a gift to someone who is a habitual consumer of tea, worth a visit.
• Ferret: is a jeweler with several stores in and around Nice. Its particularity is to be the only to sell a line of jewelry with the image of an icon of Nice, the chaise bleue.
• Fnac and Virgin Store are department stores that sell books, hi-tech, etc. … To buy the book topped with a classic written in French or macarons, a nice gadget, a t-shirt, a good book of French pastry, a calendar with the French proverbs, sets to make macarons, mini-books with the recipes of the most popular brands in France or the one with the excuses commonly used in French.
• Watercolors: the Vieux-Nice is full of shops of local artists and vendors of watercolors representing the beautiful scenery of the Côte d’Azur. If you want to play it safe, I recommend the atelier of Sylvie T.
• Transparence: always in the old part of town, in the labyrinth of streets and alleys, is a store that sells pretty unusual inclusions of miniature boats, and other small objects. Not miss the classic blue chair niçoise.
• Football: For sports fans, especially football, there’s a store that sells merchandise of the local team.

Tips:

• Remember to ask to shopkeepers some papier cadeaux or papier emballage to carry your gifts.
• Try to make original gifts, but not at all costs: the vibrating massager in the shape of the Negresco for grandma. Maybe not.
• Remember that shops close early and often make a break of 2 hours for lunch. Also typically, they do not enter you, already as a quarter of an hour before closing time.
• For shopping, you can start from Avenue Jean Medecin, where you will find most of the shops, the Nice Etoile and Les Galeries Lafayette. Otherwise there is also CAP3000. For local handicrafts and souvenirs instead, head to the old part of town.
• Sales: Please check dates of discounts (soldes) and remember that in France there are almost always démarques (progressive reductions from week to week up to 70%)

Last-Minute Gifts:

You still have gifts to make, or the stay time was too short to look for souvenirs to take home? DO NOT PANIC! At the airport, as usual, you can find some ideas that will save you from the embarrassment of returning empty-handed. Here are some suggestions:

• Fragonard: Inside the duty free, there is the products of this “Maison du Parfumeur” that produces its fragrance in the Maritime Alps. With 10 € you can find packs with 4 perfumed soaps in various fragrances, definitely useful for any type of recipient. Very interesting gift packages, in particular that of solid perfumes (especially useful to keep in your bag and if you travel by plane): it is a pack of 6 boxes with different fragrances. The cost is quite high (30 €), but you can easily turn into 6 small gifts for girlfriends, mom, sisters, aunts, etc. … So amortizing the expense.
• L’Occitane: this brand of cosmetics and perfumes are also located in Italy, but is less common and famous. Has very nice products  and will surely be easy to find a small gift to take home.
• Traditional French: In addition to the traditional shop selling regional specialties, you will also find the store La Cure Gourmande. French retail chain famous more than for the quality of its products, for the wonderful tins and gift boxes in vintage style. If instead, you don’t want to miss to bring back the classic “macarons”, by Paul you should find a small assortment.
• Clothing and Accessories: If  it’s an important gift, and with a higher budget, surely the mother or girlfriend will love an Hermès scarf or a bag at Longchamp.
• Children: The French people have a special focus on children. The toy shops are carefully decorated and children’s books are true masterpieces. At the airport you will find a multi-brand store where to buy some presents for children. And then, there is a pharmacy. Well yes, if you happen to pass (I hope not), try the gel hand sanitizers “assanis“. The kids and girls line is pocket, fragranced and colorful. Children will love to wash their hands.
